  3. welfare and nationalization programme 1945-49
  4. (although he failed in an attempt to
  5. nationalize the banks 1947) and initiated an
  6. immigration programme and the Snowy Mountains
  7. hydroelectric project. Chifley was minister
  8. of postwar reconstruction 1942-45 under John
  9. Curtin, when he succeeded him as prime
  10. minister. He crushed a coal miners' strike
  11. 1949 by using troops as mine labour. He was
  12. leader of the Opposition from 1949 until his
  13. death.
